Make Papel Picado

“From September 15th to October 15th, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated as a way to promote the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic-Americans — specifically, those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Communities mark the achievements of Hispanic and Latino Americans with festivals and educational activities.”

BAZIC Products will be hosting an Arts & Crafts booth at Plaza West Covina’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration event – Saturday, September 17, 2022. We created a simple Papel Picado design for kids and families to make at this event.

Materials you will need:

Step 1: Gather materials

Step 2: Fold construction paper in half lengthwise

Step 3: Fold construction paper in half

Step 4: Fold construction paper in half again

Step 5: Along the closed folded side, take one corner and fold to create a triangle

Step 6: Once you have your paper like this (refer to photo), you can draw out designs or go straight into cutting your design

Step 7: We made a curve along this side and a curve on the tip

Step 8: Fold the paper in half (refer to photo) and draw triangles.

Step 9: If you want a decorative end, draw out curves on this end (refer to photo)

Step 10: Cut out design
The part where you drew the triangles, the cut is not going to be clean since the paper will be thick from being folded so much. You can unfold and cut the areas that need to be fixed.

Step 11: Use hole paper puncher to create more designs

Step 12: Enjoy!
This is a simple design that we created, but if you got the hang of where to cut, feel free to make your own unique Papel Picado
